ARTIST STATEMENT
LIMOGES, JEWELRY & UNIQUE CREATIONS
I have been working with enamels for over thirty years. Starting as an apprentice in Vienna
I had been introduced to several different techniques but found Limoges
the most suitable technique to “paint” with enamels.
I keep my enamel pieces challenging and interesting by making each a one-of-a-kind creation.
I specialize in animal and human portraiture as well as landscapes inspired by my travels to near and
far away places. I work mostly from my own photographs
and create an exact drawing in pencil before I start the enamel piece.
To create my Limoges I start with a metal base, copper is my metal of choice.
I apply at first by sifting, then with a brush many layers of transparent, opalescent and opaque enamels.
Between layers I incorporate fine silver and pure gold foils,
granules, paillons and in some cases gold leaf. I finish by applying painting
enamels (mixed with clear firing oils) with a crow-quill pen for the very fine details and outlines.
Each piece has between fifteen and twenty firings at 1200º – 1800ºF.
My husband Wolfgang will then create a hand fabricated setting for the Limoges using 14k, 22k, 24k gold and sterling silver.
Among other gems we often like to use opals because of the great depth and colors
much like enamels, many of them are like paintings in themselves and we feel they compliment my Limoges.
We have been working together for the last twenty years and collaborate on each design
and the materials to be used.
Our Limoges are in many private collections throughout the world and they often include special request commissions.
We have exhibited in many fine Art and Craft Festivals in the US as well as participated in several
"International Juried Enamel Exhibits”, sponsored by the Northern
California Enamel Guild and the Enamellist Society.
Karen L. Cohen has featured our enamel work in the recently published book “The Fine Art of Enameling”
and our Limoges will be included in the “Best of America Jewelry Artists” volume II.
We strive to create small treasures that you and yours will cherish for a lifetime.
